Discourse

Created by Jeff Atwood, co-founder of Stack Overflow, and battle-tested for over a decade with 47,600+ GitHub stars, Discourse powers community forums for GitHub, Docker, Rust, Netlify, and thousands of organizations worldwide. The platform combines long-form threaded discussion with built-in real-time chat, enabling communities to move fluidly between asynchronous conversations and live interaction. Five automated trust levels progressively unlock permissions — posting links, editing wiki posts, flagging content, and moderating — based on reading time, post count, and community engagement, reducing spam and abuse without manual intervention. The Discourse AI plugin integrates with OpenAI, Anthropic, and self-hosted HuggingFace endpoints for automated topic summarization, sentiment analysis, semantic search, and AI-assisted content triage. Over 200 official and community plugins extend functionality with features like the Data Explorer for ad-hoc SQL queries against the forum database, polls, solved-topic marking, voting, calendar events, and custom user fields. SSO and OAuth support connects Google, Facebook, Apple, GitHub, and SAML identity providers, while reply-by-email and mailing list mode let users participate entirely through their inbox. The Ember.js single-page frontend delivers responsive performance across all devices with PWA support and web push notifications. Deployment uses Docker via the official discourse_docker launcher with automatic Let's Encrypt HTTPS, resource scaling based on server hardware, and support for single-container or multi-container configurations. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. GPL v2.0 licensed.

Flarum

Flarum gives support communities, open-source projects, and hobby groups a discussion forum that loads like a modern app but keeps every thread findable for years. Members browse discussions by primary tags that act like categories or follow finer secondary labels such as Solved, and sticky posts pin the important threads at the top. The editor accepts Markdown or rich text, and mentions, likes, and in-browser notifications keep conversations moving without a page refresh. Private conversations between members are built in, and new messages arrive live, so quick questions do not have to become public threads. Moderators get flags for reported posts, approval queues, suspensions, and a tamper-resistant audit log that records logins, permission changes, deletions, and edits with the actor and IP address. Administrators shape access with groups and per-tag permissions, restyle the forum with themes, custom CSS, and dark mode, and install hundreds of community extensions from the built-in manager. Search covers posts as well as discussion titles, finds members from any part of their name, and even segments Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text properly. Optional realtime updates, email digests with unsubscribe links, and a board-style Deck view round out the ways members can follow along. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. MIT licensed.

Misago

A Misago forum comes with threads, polls, private conversations, nested categories, and the moderation tools to keep them in order. Categories nest to any depth. Permissions follow rank, role, and category. Registration can require e-mail activation or administrator approval, and a Q&A challenge, reCAPTCHA, Stop Forum Spam, or an IP blacklist can turn away spam sign-ups. More than 50 OAuth providers, including Google, GitHub, Steam, and Facebook, can handle sign-in. Posts accept GitHub-flavoured Markdown, a BBCode subset, or both, and attachments get thumbnails. Polls allow public or private voters, multiple choices, vote changes, and deadlines. Question threads let one reply be marked as the best answer. A post-accurate read tracker flags threads with new replies. Private threads stay visible only to the people invited. Presence shows who is online, and members can hide their own activity from non-admins. Custom profile fields get their own display and validation rules. Features and settings for GDPR compliance are included. Themes restyle the forum from the admin panel, and plugins extend it through action and filter hooks. Moderators can edit, move, hide, approve, delete, or close content, and a moderation queue holds new submissions for review before other members see them. If someone empties a post, the edit log shows the original wording and can restore it. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. GPL-2.0 licensed.
