Foreman

Foreman is the control room for a server fleet, taking machines from blank hardware or an empty VM to configured, monitored hosts through one web interface. Create a host entry and it network-boots by PXE or UEFI HTTP, or starts from a discovery image that phones home its hardware inventory so unknown machines can be claimed and built by rule. Installation runs from templates for Kickstart, Preseed, AutoYaST, Agama, and cloud-init, while host groups bundle the operating system, partition layout, and parameters that make every build of a role identical. The same console provisions onto bare metal, libvirt, VMware, oVirt, Amazon EC2, Google Compute Engine, and OpenStack, because each provider plugs in as a compute resource with its own images and networks. After installation, Puppet classes and parameters, Ansible roles with recurring runs, or Salt states keep configuration enforced, and the reports and facts those tools send back fill dashboards showing which hosts are current, which drifted, and which are erroring. Smart Proxy services carry DHCP, DNS, TFTP, and configuration enforcement into each subnet or datacenter segment, remote execution runs jobs across the fleet, and the Katello plugin adds content and patch management on top. Hammer gives the whole API a command-line face, and role-based access with LDAP or FreeIPA sign-in keeps large teams in their lanes. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. GPL-3.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • One Process, Blank To Managed
  • A host goes from entry creation to network boot, templated installation, configuration management enrollment, and health monitoring inside Foreman. No hand-offs between imaging tools, scripts, and spreadsheets in between.
  • Templates Replace Tribal Knowledge
  • Provisioning templates and host groups capture exactly how each role is built: installer options, partitioning, and parameters in versionable text. Rebuilds are identical instead of remembered.
  • Every Subnet Gets Services
  • Smart Proxies run DHCP, DNS, TFTP, and configuration services inside each network segment or remote site, while one Foreman server and one API coordinate the whole estate.
  • Fleet Health At A Glance
  • Facts and configuration reports stream back from Puppet, Ansible, and Salt into dashboards that flag outdated and erroring hosts, so drift and failures surface before users report them.

Features

  • Network And Image Provisioning
  • PXE and UEFI HTTP boot, PXE-less discovery with kexec, boot-disk builds, and image-based deployment, driven by Kickstart, Preseed, AutoYaST, Agama, and finish templates.
  • Compute Resource Abstraction
  • Bare metal plus libvirt, VMware, oVirt, Amazon EC2, Google Compute Engine, and OpenStack appear as compute resources with unified host creation, images, and networking.
  • Puppet, Ansible, And Salt
  • An external node classifier and hierarchical parameters for Puppet, Ansible role assignment with recurring runs, and Salt integration, with reports collected from all three.
  • Reports And Fact Dashboards
  • Host configuration status, applied and failed resources, and collected facts aggregate into searchable dashboards and trend views across the entire fleet.
  • Hammer CLI And REST API
  • The Hammer command line and the versioned REST API expose host registration, provisioning, and reporting, so Foreman slots into existing automation and pipelines.
