StackStorm

Sensors watch your infrastructure so your engineers do not have to watch it at 3 a.m. StackStorm is event-driven automation: Python sensors poll or listen to external systems (monitoring alerts, ticket updates, chat messages, webhooks, timers) and inject each event as a trigger. Rules match triggers against criteria you define and fire the response automatically, mapping the event payload straight into action parameters. Actions do the work: SSH commands, REST calls, and integrations for AWS, Docker, OpenStack, Puppet, Jira, Slack, and hundreds more from community packs, or your own scripts wrapped with a few lines of metadata. Multi-step responses become workflows that sequence actions with conditions, branching, and data passed between tasks, handling everything from disk-full remediation to full deployment pipelines. Everything bundles into packs, the shareable units that group sensors, rules, actions, and workflows per product or per automation, installable from the StackStorm Exchange or your own Git repositories. The web UI runs actions, explores workflow executions down to individual task results in real time, manages rules, and installs packs, while every execution, manual or automated, lands in an audit trail with its triggering context. ChatOps aliases even let the team trigger approved automations from chat. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. Apache-2.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • Events Become Actions Automatically
  • Sensors convert alerts, webhooks, timers, and ticket changes into triggers, and rules fire the matching remediation or notification without a human copying context between monitoring and runbooks.
  • Workflows Orchestrate Multi-Step Fixes
  • The workflow engine sequences actions with conditional transitions, retries, and data passing, turning fragile shell scripts for deployments and incident response into inspectable, reusable automations.
  • Packs Make Automation Shareable
  • Integrations and automations bundle into packs containing sensors, rules, actions, and workflows, installable from the StackStorm Exchange or private Git so teams reuse proven content.
  • Every Execution Is Audited
  • Manual and automated runs record their triggering context, parameters, and results in the history and audit logs, ready to stream to Logstash, Splunk, statsd, or syslog.

Features

  • Sensors And Triggers
  • Python sensor plugins poll external systems or receive inbound events and emit typed triggers, alongside built-in webhook, timer, and internal st2 triggers for actions and key-value changes.
  • Rules Engine In YAML
  • Rules declare a trigger type, optional Jinja criteria over the payload, and an action or workflow reference, mapping trigger fields into parameters with templating.
  • Actions And Runners
  • Actions run as Python plugins or wrapped scripts through local, remote SSH, HTTP, and announcement runners, invocable from the CLI, API, web UI, rules, or workflows.
  • Web UI Execution Explorer
  • The React-based st2web interface runs actions, follows workflow executions to individual task results in real time, edits rules, and installs packs from the browser.
  • ChatOps Aliases
  • Action aliases expose approved automations as chat commands with formatted results, so on-call engineers remediate from Slack without shell access to production hosts.
