Sharry

Sharry moves files in both directions: you hand someone a download link, and they hand files back to you, without either side juggling accounts on a commercial transfer service. Upload a file and you get a public URL that is hard to guess but open to anyone who has it; add a password as a second secret, set how long the share lives, and cap how many times it may be downloaded. Expired shares clean themselves up on a schedule. Uploads run over the tus protocol, so a dropped connection in the middle of a two-gigabyte video is an inconvenience, not a restart: send the same file again and it resumes from the last received chunk. Downloads support caching and range requests, which means recipients can stream a video in the browser and scrub its timeline instead of waiting for the whole file. The reverse direction is what makes Sharry unusual: every registered user can maintain alias pages behind their own unguessable URLs, where clients, students, or family members upload files straight to that user, with an email notification when something arrives. Everything is scriptable through a documented REST API, and files can live in the database, on the filesystem, or in S3-compatible storage. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. GPL-3.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • Send And Receive, One Tool
  • Download links go out to anyone, and alias pages let anyone send files back to a specific user, so collecting deliverables from clients stops depending on their accounts, their tools, or attachment size limits.
  • Uploads That Survive Bad Networks
  • The tus protocol resumes an interrupted upload from the last received chunk instead of starting over, so multi-gigabyte files cross flaky hotel Wi-Fi and mobile connections without babysitting or third-party resumable hacks.
  • Shares With An Expiry Date
  • Every share can carry a password, a lifetime after which it disappears, and a maximum download count, and a periodic cleanup removes expired shares automatically, so yesterday's link is not a permanent hole.
  • Scriptable Down To The Metal
  • A documented OpenAPI REST interface exposes uploads, shares, alias pages, and administration to scripts and other systems, with token authentication, so Sharry slots into backup jobs and pipelines instead of staying a manual chore.

Features

  • Alias Pages For Receiving Files
  • Users maintain alias pages behind hard-to-guess URLs where anyone can upload files with a description; the owner is notified by email and can disable or delete an alias any time.
  • Resumable Tus Uploads
  • Uploads speak the tus protocol alongside standard multipart requests, so an interrupted transfer resumes from the last received chunk when the same file is sent again, even across browser restarts.
  • Streaming Friendly Downloads
  • ETag and HTTP range request support lets browsers cache files and fetch the needed portions, which makes it possible to play videos in the page and click into the timeline.
  • Database, Filesystem, Or S3 Storage
  • File contents can live in PostgreSQL, MariaDB, or the embedded H2 database, on a local filesystem directory, or in any S3-compatible object store such as MinIO, chosen per configured store.
  • OAuth And Internal Accounts
  • Users sign in through internal accounts with open, invited-only, or closed signup, or through external OAuth2 providers such as GitHub and Google, with separate admin routes for instance management.
