Larapaper
An e-ink frame on your kitchen wall should show your calendar, not beg a cloud subscription for permission; Larapaper is the self-hosted TRMNL server that keeps those screens yours. Devices on your network announce themselves and auto-join, and the admin panel tracks each unit's battery, WiFi strength, firmware, and current screen, from the official TRMNL OG and X to SeeedStudio DIY kits, reTerminal panels, Kindle and Kobo e-readers, and Raspberry Pi displays. Content comes from wherever you like: native plugins and recipe mashups, more than a thousand catalog recipes importable from TRMNL and the community, your own Liquid or Blade markup written in the web editor, or a simple POST to the screen API from any script. Playlists rotate screens on a schedule, so the morning shows trains and weather while the afternoon shows the build board. The render pipeline draws with headless Chrome, converts through ImageMagick to each device's exact palette, and caches results so sleepy e-ink clients wake, fetch, and sleep again in seconds. Run it beside the official cloud as a proxy when you want hybrid coverage, on SQLite for a shelf box or Postgres for a fleet, with dark mode in the admin and Docker Compose for deployment. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. MIT licensed.
Benefits
- Your E-Ink, No Subscription
- Larapaper replaces the TRMNL cloud for screen generation and device management, so dashboards keep updating even if the vendor service changes terms, pricing, or disappears.
- Many Devices, One Panel
- TRMNL OG and X, SeeedStudio kits, reTerminal, ESP32 builds, e-readers, and Pi displays check in to one admin that tracks battery, signal, firmware, and current content.
- Content From Anywhere
- Native plugins, catalog recipes, hand-written markup, and a REST screen API all feed the same pipeline, so a cron job and a designer produce screens side by side.
- Hybrid When You Want It
- Proxy mode forwards to the native TRMNL cloud (Developer Edition) for official plugins while local screens run on your schedule, mixing both worlds on one device.
Features
- Device Management
- Auto-join discovers TRMNL-compatible devices on the LAN; the panel shows battery level, WiFi RSSI, firmware version, and the live screen image for every unit.
- Screen Generation Pipeline
- Devices call /api/display, Puppeteer renders the selected screen, and ImageMagick converts it to the device-specific PNG palette; Laravel Horizon queues keep bursts smooth.
- Plugins And Recipes
- Native handlers (Screens API, Screenshot, Image Webhook) join recipe plugins with Liquid and Blade markup, plus imports from the 170+ community and 1000+ TRMNL catalog recipes.
- Playlists And Scheduling
- Ordered playlists with per-screen durations rotate content through the day and can interleave proxied Core screens, all editable from the web interface.
- Screen API
- POST /api/screen with an access token updates any device's display from scripts and automations, while markup screens can also be authored directly in the browser.
