Tesserae

Built for e-ink screens, Tesserae composes calm wall dashboards from your calendar, weather, and Home Assistant data in a browser, then renders each frame at the panel's exact resolution. Lay out pages as a grid of cells or on a free canvas of widgets, text, and shapes, with a live preview. What you see is what paints. Dozens of bundled widgets cover weather, calendars, clocks, news, to-do lists, and photos, and a community catalog adds more widgets, themes, and templates. Frames are dithered to each panel's measured palette, so photos and gradients stay clean on Spectra 6 color, mono, and grayscale screens. One server drives a whole fleet. Each panel keeps its own dashboards, schedules, and rotations, and smart sync renders just before a battery panel wakes while quiet hours let it sleep overnight. Seeed reTerminal and XIAO panels flash from the browser, and Pimoroni Inky, Waveshare, M5Stack, TRMNL-compatible devices, and KOReader Kindles and Kobos work too. Inside Home Assistant it runs as a sidebar App. Home Assistant widgets show entities, history, energy, and cameras, and MQTT discovery turns each panel into a device with its frame, battery level, and signal. No account is needed, and update checks stay off unless you opt in. Ask Claude or any MCP client to lay out a dashboard, check a preview, and push it. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. AGPL-3.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • One server for every panel
  • A single instance drives a fleet of e-ink panels, each with its own dashboards, schedules, and rotations, and a page bound to differently sized screens renders once per distinct size.
  • Battery panels that sleep for weeks
  • Panels wake, fetch a frame, paint, and sleep again; smart sync renders just before each wake, an unchanged frame skips the slow e-ink refresh, and quiet hours cover the night.
  • Editor previews match the panel
  • Pages render at the panel's exact resolution and are dithered to its measured palette for Spectra 6, mono, and grayscale screens, so what you see in the editor is what paints.
  • No accounts and no tracking
  • The server needs no account and never has to contact its maker; update checks and an anonymous install count are off by default and run only if you opt in.

Features

  • Grid and canvas editor
  • Compose pages from layout presets with a widget picker per cell, or drag widgets, text, and shapes onto a free canvas, with a live preview beside the form.
  • Widgets and community catalog
  • Dozens of bundled widgets cover weather, calendars, clocks, news, to-do lists, and photos; the audited catalog adds widgets, themes, and templates that install from Settings.
  • Home Assistant integration
  • Run it as a sidebar App, show entities, history, energy, and cameras, and let MQTT discovery expose each panel's frame, battery, and signal as entities.
  • Wide panel support
  • Browser-flashed Seeed reTerminal and XIAO panels, plus Pimoroni Inky, Waveshare, M5Stack, TRMNL-compatible devices, and Kindles or Kobos running KOReader, delivered over REST or MQTT.
  • Schedules and rotations
  • Push on demand or on a schedule, rotate several dashboards on one panel, and set quiet hours so battery panels sleep overnight instead of refreshing.
  • MCP dashboard builder
  • An MCP endpoint lets Claude or any MCP client lay out a freeform dashboard, render a preview to check its work, and push it to a panel.
