Kept
Kept is a self-hosted home inventory that answers where things are, what they are, and what is due. Locations, rooms, shelves, and boxes nest inside each other, so moving a box moves everything in it, and each location can be viewed as a list, a grid, or a 3D map with pins for low stock, loans, and due items. Every thing gets a short ID and a QR code for label sheets or roll printers, and scanning a label opens the box. Capture a thing, receipt, or whole room from the installable phone web app, offline too; an AI provider you choose, including Ollama, then suggests details for you to confirm. Receipts, manuals, and warranties attach to items, reminders arrive in the app, by email, by push, or in a calendar feed, and an insurance report exports photos, serials, and receipts. Lending tracking, vehicle readings and services, moving-house box lists, and stocktakes cover the rest of the household, with shared locations and roles for everyone you live with. An assistant answers questions like where the HDMI cable is, and an MCP endpoint lets Claude or other AI agents add and move things, with changes waiting for your approval. Nightly backups and imports from Homebox and CSV round it out. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. AGPL-3.0 licensed.
Benefits
- Find anything down to the box
- Search shows each match with its full path, such as Home, Office, Desk drawer, Cable box, and a QR label lets you scan a box to see what is inside.
- Warranties and insurance, ready when needed
- Warranties, services, and expiring documents are listed in the order they run out, and an insurance report packs photos, serials, and receipts into a PDF and claim pack.
- Runs on a small VPS
- A single Node.js image and PostgreSQL 18 with pgvector run under Docker Compose, with a signed Helm chart for Kubernetes, on as little as 2 GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores.
- You choose the AI, or none
- No telemetry and an update check that is off by default; AI capture works with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, OpenRouter, Groq, or Ollama, and without a provider you simply type details.
Features
- 3D location map
- Each location renders as an isometric or plan map of floors, rooms, and furniture, with pins for low stock, loans, and due items, plus an Arrange mode.
- QR labels and scanning
- Print label sheets or roll labels with a short ID and QR code; scan sessions count a shelf, pack a box, or move a pile in one go.
- AI capture and assistant
- Photograph a thing, receipt, label, or room and a provider such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or Ollama suggests details; changes from the assistant wait for your confirmation.
- MCP server for Claude
- An MCP endpoint at /mcp lets Claude, ChatGPT, and other AI agents search and edit your inventory using tokens limited to the locations you choose.
- Offline phone web app
- The phone web app installs from the browser to capture, scan, and search offline and sync later; camera, install, and push need HTTPS, which an optional Caddy profile provides.
- Backups you can read
- Nightly restic backups go to a directory, S3, or SFTP, each with a copy that opens in a browser without Kept, plus imports from Homebox and CSV.
