Eclipse Kura

Between the factory floor and the cloud sits a gateway that has to speak Modbus to a PLC, OPC-UA to a machine, and MQTT to your platform, and Eclipse Kura is the framework that runs that gateway as a managed, programmable container. Drivers encapsulate each field protocol and its settings, while Assets model the data channels of attached devices, giving every sensor and controller a uniform mirror that applications can read, write, and publish. Kura Wires turns edge logic into a diagram: drag an asset onto the canvas, wire it through timers, filters, and SQL-based aggregation, and publish the result to the cloud, installing extra components from the Eclipse Kura Marketplace when the palette runs short. Telemetry survives bad networks because the data service stores messages locally and forwards them when the connection returns, with publishing policies abstracting the underlying MQTT transport. Administrators manage the whole gateway from the web console: network interfaces, firewall, installed bundles, snapshots of the full configuration that can be exported and restored, and remote deployment and upgrade of applications through the cloud connection. Hardware services expose serial ports, USB, Bluetooth, GPS position, GPIO, I2C, and a watchdog that resets the system when a critical component stops reporting. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. EPL-2.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • One Model For Every Device
  • Drivers encapsulate Modbus, OPC-UA, and other field protocols while Assets model device channels uniformly, so applications read and write heterogeneous machines through one API and cloud messages mirror them remotely.
  • Visual Edge Pipelines
  • Kura Wires lets operators build data collection and processing flows by wiring assets, timers, filters, and SQL aggregation on a canvas, then publish results through cloud connectors without writing code.
  • Telemetry That Survives Outages
  • Store-and-forward data services buffer messages on the gateway during network failures and publish them when connectivity returns, with policy-driven MQTT transport abstracted from application code.
  • Remotely Managed Gateways
  • A web console and cloud-based remote management deploy and upgrade applications, configure networking and firewall, and snapshot the entire configuration for export, restore, and fleet-wide replication.

Features

  • Web Administration Console
  • A browser console inside the Kura container manages network interfaces, services, bundles, and security settings, giving gateway operators a complete local administration interface.
  • Hardware Access Services
  • OSGi services expose serial, USB, Bluetooth, GPS position, clock synchronization, GPIO, I2C, and SPI, plus a watchdog service that resets the system when components fail to report.
  • Cloud Connectors And Kapua
  • Cloud services share one broker connection across applications with topic partitioning, and the Eclipse Kapua connector adds device management, birth messages, and application messaging.
  • Configuration Snapshots
  • The configuration service snapshots every registered service's settings for import and export, making gateway provisioning repeatable and disaster recovery a file restore.
  • Container And Gateway Profiles
  • Kura ships profiles for popular gateways and a Docker container profile, so the same edge applications run on industrial hardware or generic Linux hosts unchanged.
