Eclipse Ditto

Every physical device on your network gets a living digital counterpart in Eclipse Ditto: a Thing whose Features hold its current state, desired state, and properties, readable and writable through APIs even while the device itself is offline. Your application talks to the twin over a REST-like HTTP API for CRUD and search, over WebSocket for real-time bidirectional streams, or over Server-Sent Events for change notifications, and Ditto routes commands down the live channel to the actual device when it is connected. Devices and backends connect through managed Connections to MQTT, AMQP 1.0 and 0.9.1, Apache Kafka, and HTTP endpoints, with payload mapping that translates between device formats and Ditto Protocol JSON. Fine-grained Policies decide per subject and resource who may read a temperature, change a setpoint, or receive an event, including namespace-scoped entries and partial change notifications that only reveal fields a subscriber may see. Search across millions of twins uses an RQL query language with custom MongoDB indexes, and Web of Things integration generates Thing Descriptions scoped to each requester's permissions. The bundled Explorer UI lets operators browse Things, inspect Features, and time-travel a twin's state to any past revision or timestamp to see exactly what changed and when. OpenID Connect and basic authentication protect the gateway, and Prometheus metrics expose live entity counts per namespace. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. EPL-2.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • Devices Reachable While Offline
  • Applications read the last known twin state and queue desired changes while a device is disconnected, then Ditto delivers commands when it reconnects, decoupling app uptime from device uptime.
  • Permission Down to Fields
  • Policies grant read and write rights per subject, resource, and even individual fields, so a dashboard sees telemetry without ever gaining the right to send commands.
  • Brokers Connected Without Glue Code
  • Managed MQTT, AMQP, and Kafka connections with payload mapping replace hand-written bridge services between device fleets and your backend applications.
  • History You Can Inspect
  • The Explorer UI's time travel shows a twin's state at any past revision, turning "what did the sensor report at 3 a.m." into a direct lookup instead of log archaeology.

Features

  • Things and Features Model
  • Each device becomes a Thing with named Features holding properties and desired versus reported state, all as JSON served by the twin channel.
  • Connectivity Service
  • Managed connections to MQTT 3.1.1 and 5, AMQP 1.0 and 0.9.1, Apache Kafka, and HTTP, with JavaScript payload mapping and per-connection monitoring.
  • RQL Twin Search
  • Search and count twins across namespaces with the RQL filter language, sortable results, and configurable custom MongoDB indexes for hot workloads.
  • Web of Things Support
  • WoT Thing Descriptions and a Thing Directory endpoint expose twins in W3C standard form, dynamically scoped to the requesting user's policy permissions.
  • Explorer UI Time Travel
  • The bundled web UI browses Things and Features and replays historical state and events at any revision or timestamp for debugging and audits.
