Eclipse Hono
Eclipse Hono is an IoT connectivity platform that sits between device fleets and business applications, accepting connections over MQTT, HTTP, AMQP 1.0, and CoAP adapters and normalizing everything into uniform telemetry and event streams. Devices authenticate against a central registry of tenants and credentials, with X.509 client certificates, pre-shared keys, or automatic provisioning for zero-touch onboarding. Applications consume normalized data from Apache Kafka or an AMQP 1.0 messaging network, choosing per tenant which backbone carries its traffic, and send commands back down to devices through the same platform with delivery feedback. Resource limits cap how much data each tenant's devices may move, keeping one noisy fleet from crowding out the rest, while metrics and tracing follow every message hop. The 2.7 release adds preliminary MQTT 5 support with corrected connect reason codes, message tracing logs, and a hardened JDBC device registry backed by PostgreSQL for production tenant and credential management. Protocol adapters scale horizontally as stateless services, so capacity grows by adding instances behind a load balancer. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. EPL-2.0 licensed.
Benefits
- One API For Every Protocol
- Devices connect through MQTT, HTTP, AMQP, or CoAP adapters while applications see one normalized messaging model. Protocol churn at the edge stops rippling through your backend code and integrations.
- Registry-Driven Device Security
- Tenants, device registration, and credentials live in a central registry that adapters consult on every connection. X.509 certificates, pre-shared keys, and auto-provisioning cover onboarding from factory to field.
- Backbone Freedom Per Tenant
- Route each tenant's messages over Apache Kafka or an AMQP 1.0 network, configured per tenant on the same deployment. Different customers get the transport their applications already consume.
- Command and Control Included
- Send commands down to devices and receive delivery feedback through the same platform that carries telemetry up. Request-response patterns work even for devices that connect only intermittently.
Features
- Protocol Adapters
- Stateless adapters for MQTT (including preliminary MQTT 5 in 2.7), HTTP, AMQP 1.0, and CoAP terminate device connections at scale. Horizontal instances behind a load balancer absorb fleet growth.
- Telemetry and Event Channels
- Separate high-volume telemetry from guaranteed event delivery so sensor streams and critical alarms get appropriate handling. Applications subscribe to the channel each workload actually needs.
- JDBC Device Registry
- Persist tenants, registration data, and credentials in PostgreSQL through the production JDBC registry with full management APIs. Provisioning changes emit notification messages to downstream components automatically.
- Tenant Resource Limits
- Cap data volume and connection counts per tenant with limits checked against Prometheus metrics. Multi-tenant platforms stay fair when one customer's fleet misbehaves or spikes.
- Message Tracing
- Follow messages across adapters and backbones with tracing logs and span context propagation, expanded in the 2.7 release. Debugging a lost reading stops being a multi-system guessing game.
