Dawarich Atlas

Atlas turns OpenStreetMap data for a city, a country, or the whole planet into a maps backend your applications can search, route with, and query for nearby places, all on hardware you control: pick a region and it downloads and indexes that territory's data locally. Search behaves the way users expect, with autocomplete matches grouped into clusters across the installed dataset, numbered so dense areas stay readable, and a show-all action that frames the full result set. Routing returns directions for driving, cycling, and walking, and a map-matching endpoint snaps noisy recorded GPS tracks onto the real road network. Ask what is here at any coordinate and category pickers surface restaurants, stations, parking, and hundreds of other place types around it, while transit planning threads timetables into door-to-door journeys. The settings panel is the control room: toggle search, routing, points of interest, and transit independently, switch the active region, and watch live progress as new territory is ingested and merged in the background. Developers plug in through one consistent JSON API covering geocoding, reverse geocoding in batches, coverage checks, and every map capability, documented as a public OpenAPI reference. Because every dataset lives on the box, the map keeps answering during outages and inside private networks. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. AGPL-3.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • Maps without the meter
  • Geocoding, routing, and tile requests run against datasets installed on your server, so usage spikes never become per-request invoices from a commercial maps provider.
  • Works fully offline
  • Search, directions, points of interest, and transit all answer from local OpenStreetMap data, keeping the map alive on private networks and during upstream outages.
  • Region sized to need
  • Install one city in minutes, a country over hours, or merge several regions together, swapping the active coverage from the settings panel without redeploying the stack.
  • One API, every capability
  • A uniform JSON envelope covers forward and reverse geocoding, routing, map matching, nearby places, transit, and coverage, documented through a public OpenAPI reference.

Features

  • Search and autocomplete
  • Photon-powered forward search and reverse geocoding over locally installed data, with results grouped into numbered clusters and a batch reverse endpoint for bulk lookups.
  • Routing and map matching
  • Valhalla calculates drive, cycle, and walk routes with turn guidance, and snaps recorded GPS tracks onto the road network through the map-matching endpoint.
  • Points of interest
  • Overpass-backed category pickers answer what is here at any coordinate, surfacing restaurants, stations, parking, and hundreds of other OpenStreetMap place types nearby.
  • Transit planning
  • MOTIS plans timetable-aware journeys from installed GTFS feeds by default, with OpenTripPlanner selectable as the alternative engine for regions that prefer it.
  • Self-served map tiles
  • Protomaps PMTiles rendered with MapLibre GL stream from your own server through Caddy, so basemaps load without external tile providers or API keys.
  • Settings control plane
  • The admin panel toggles each capability, selects regions, and applies changes with live ingestion progress while downloads merge in the background automatically.
