LastSignal
Write the messages today that the people you love would need if you suddenly could not send them, and LastSignal holds them encrypted until silence says it is time. The system emails you a check-in on a schedule you set; answer it and nothing happens, which is exactly the point. Miss one and reminders follow at fixed intervals, and the final reminder can ping a trusted contact who is able to pause the countdown, buying time when a hospital stay or a lost phone is the real story. If nobody responds, your messages are delivered by email to each recipient, who decrypts them with their own passphrase; the server never holds plaintext, so even the person running it cannot read what you wrote. You can stagger access with a per-recipient delay, so one person reads their message the day it arrives while another waits the number of days you chose. Automations can report in through a keep-alive token endpoint instead of email, for machines that prove you are around by staying alive themselves. Timings for check-ins, reminders, and the trusted-contact pause are all configurable per account. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. MIT licensed.
Benefits
- Messages Nobody Else Can Read
- End-to-end encryption with XChaCha20-Poly1305 and X25519 keys means the server stores only ciphertext. Even the operator of your instance cannot open a message meant for someone else.
- Silence Triggers, You Control Timing
- Check-in intervals, three reminder attempts, attempt spacing, and the trusted-contact pause are all configurable per account, so the switch matches your life instead of a fixed vendor countdown.
- A Human Can Pause It
- The final reminder can ping a trusted contact who confirms you are fine and pauses delivery, protecting against false alarms from travel, illness, or a broken phone.
- Staggered Delivery per Recipient
- A per-recipient delay in days controls when each person can decrypt after delivery, which suits time-sensitive instructions and gives different people access at different moments.
Features
- Email-First Check-Ins
- Periodic check-in emails with reminder attempts at fixed intervals and magic-link sign-in. No app to install for you or for the people receiving your messages.
- Trusted Contact Safeguard
- The final reminder can ping a trusted contact, who can pause the delivery countdown for a configurable number of days before it resumes automatically.
- Modern Sealed Cryptography
- Argon2id key derivation with a 256MB memory cost, XChaCha20-Poly1305 message encryption, and X25519 key exchange from libsodium, in a zero-knowledge design you can audit.
- Keep-Alive Webhook Token
- An optional external token lets automations check in machine-to-machine at /webhooks/keepalive, complementing the default email-first model for advanced self-hosted setups.
- Kamal Production Deploy
- Production runs through Kamal with Docker and SSH, using SQLite for storage and your own SMTP provider for check-ins, reminders, and final delivery emails.
