FerretDB

FerretDB gives you the MongoDB developer experience without the SSPL: point your existing drivers at it and your document workloads land in PostgreSQL instead. It listens on the standard MongoDB port and translates wire-protocol queries into SQL, so applications, ORMs, and command-line tools connect unchanged, none the wiser. CRUD operations, aggregation pipelines, index creation, findAndModify, and sessions all work today, with new commands landing release after release as compatibility widens. Behind the proxy, Microsoft's open-source DocumentDB extension gives PostgreSQL a native BSON type and document operators, which is also the engine under Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB vCore. That shared engine means workloads can move between your own FerretDB deployment and Cosmos DB without an export-import project in between. Vector search support covers embedding lookups for AI features, replication covers high availability, and SCRAM-SHA-256 authentication secures connections the way MongoDB operators already expect. Because the license is Apache 2.0, you can embed it, resell it, or offer it as a managed service to your own customers with no SSPL obligations attached. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. Apache-2.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • Keep MongoDB drivers and tools
  • Every driver and application compatible with MongoDB 5.0+ connects to FerretDB unchanged, so migrations swap the connection string instead of rewriting data layers, queries, and tooling.
  • Documents stored in PostgreSQL
  • PostgreSQL with the DocumentDB extension stores your documents, bringing mature backups, replication, monitoring, and operational tooling that your team likely already runs and understands.
  • Freedom from SSPL restrictions
  • Apache 2.0 licensing lets you embed FerretDB, ship it inside products, or offer it as a service, none of which MongoDB's SSPL permits without a commercial agreement.
  • Vector search for AI features
  • Built-in vector search lets applications store embeddings beside operational documents and query them together, avoiding a separate vector database for retrieval-augmented generation features.

Features

  • MongoDB wire protocol proxy
  • FerretDB converts MongoDB 5.0+ wire protocol queries to SQL on port 27017, so drivers, shells, and tools connect without code changes or plugins.
  • DocumentDB PostgreSQL backend
  • Microsoft's open-source DocumentDB extension supplies PostgreSQL with a native BSON type and document operators, the same engine behind Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB.
  • Aggregation and indexes
  • Aggregation pipelines, count, distinct, createIndexes, and findAndModify are supported today, with the compatibility matrix in the documentation tracking every command's status.
  • Vector search support
  • Store vector embeddings alongside documents and run similarity search for AI features, keeping retrieval data in the same database as operational records.
  • SCRAM-SHA-256 authentication
  • User management commands and SCRAM-SHA-256 authentication secure deployments using the same credential model MongoDB operators already know from production systems.
