Borg Backup Server

Every connection starts at the endpoint, never at the server, so Borg Backup Server can back up Linux, Mac, and Windows machines behind NAT and firewalls without opening a single inbound port. A lightweight agent on each machine polls for tasks over HTTPS, pushes deduplicated archives over SSH, and reports live progress. Append-only SSH access means an endpoint can add and restore archives but never prune or delete them. The dashboard shows backup charts, server stats, and active jobs at a glance. Plans run from hourly to monthly, several per client, built from reusable directory templates for common server roles, with per-plan retention from hourly to yearly. Lost a file? Browse the archive tree in your browser, tick what you need, and restore it to the client or download a .tar.gz. MySQL and PostgreSQL dumps run before each backup and restore as a copy or a replacement. Repositories can live on the server, on BorgBase, Hetzner, or rsync.net, and mirror to S3-compatible storage such as AWS, Wasabi, or Backblaze B2. Apprise alerts reach more than 100 services, and a nightly report lands in your inbox. Two-factor login and role-based access guard the console. Upgrades roll out to the server and every agent together, and the server backs itself up daily. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. MIT licensed.

Benefits

  • Agents Cannot Delete Their Backups
  • SSH access is append-only, so each endpoint can add and restore archives but never prune or delete them, and retention pruning runs on the server instead.
  • Works Behind NAT And Firewalls
  • Agents poll the server over HTTPS for tasks and push data over SSH to it, so endpoints behind NAT or firewalls need no inbound ports opened toward them.
  • Browse And Restore Single Files
  • A ClickHouse catalog keeps file listings searchable, so you can find a file in any archive, restore it to the client, or download a .tar.gz without locking the repository.
  • Offsite Copies Without Extra Scripts
  • Mirror repositories to AWS, Wasabi, or Backblaze B2 through rclone, or store them directly on BorgBase, Hetzner, or rsync.net, all configured from the web interface.

Features

  • Agent-Based Architecture
  • A stdlib-only Python agent on Linux, Mac, or Windows checks in over HTTPS, runs borg jobs, reports progress, and is upgraded centrally along with the client's Borg version.
  • Scheduling And Retention
  • Plans run hourly to monthly, several per client or on manual trigger, with reusable directory templates, per-plan hourly-to-yearly prune rules, and a queue with concurrency limits and retries.
  • Database Plugins
  • MySQL and PostgreSQL pre-dumps run before each backup and restore as a copy or replacement; an optional stream mode writes dumps straight into the archive.
  • Prometheus And Apprise Alerts
  • A Prometheus /metrics endpoint exposes plan, queue, and scheduler health, and Apprise pushes failure alerts to more than 100 services, backed by nightly email reports.
  • Multi-User Access Control
  • Role-based permissions per client (view, run backups, manage repos and plans, restore, repo maintenance), TOTP two-factor login with recovery codes, and AES-256-GCM encrypted repository passphrases.
  • Self-Backup And Self-Upgrade
  • The server backs itself up daily with optional S3 sync and restore scripts, and one click upgrades the software and every agent while managing client Borg versions.
