Architecture, specifications, and capabilities of the two deployment models
Two Deployment Models
RepoCloud runs two distinct infrastructure models. Your choice determines what level of access and management you get.
Container Apps
Container Apps are managed Docker containers running on a shared container orchestration platform.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Runtime | Docker containers |
| SSH / Root Access | Not available |
| IPv4 | Shared (no dedicated IP) |
| SSL | Automatic and included. For a custom domain, the certificate is issued after the CNAME and the validation record verify |
| Custom Domains | CNAME records |
| Autoscaling | Optional: the billed tier follows usage, chosen once an hour |
| Snapshots | Not available |
| Backups | Application-level only (use the app’s built-in export/backup features) |
| Updates | One-click rebuild to the latest Docker image |
| Management | Dashboard only: rename, scale, usage chart, environment variables, Docker image, custom domain, pause and resume, rebuild, logs, delete |
VPS Apps
VPS Apps are dedicated virtual private servers with full root access.
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Runtime | Dedicated virtual machine |
| SSH / Root Access | Full root access via SSH (port 22) |
| IPv4 | Dedicated (one IPv4 per instance, included at no extra charge) |
| SSL | A VPS App is a plain server, so HTTPS on its default domain is whatever the server installs (the DevOps AI Agent is instructed to set it up for a web application it installs). A verified custom domain gets its certificate from the platform automatically |
| Custom Domains | CNAME records (not available for a server named Ubuntu VPS) |
| Autoscaling | Not available (fixed tiers only) |
| Snapshots | Available (ZFS-based, restorable) |
| Backups | Snapshots + any application-level backup you configure |
| Updates | Full control — SSH in and update manually, or use the app’s built-in updater |
| Management | Dashboard + SSH + browser console |
| AI agent | A server set up by AI Deploy has a chat with the DevOps AI Agent on its manage page (see AI Agents) |
Resource Tiers
Both deployment models share the same base tier structure. Monthly figures are nominal: the hourly price times 720 hours, a 30-day month.
| Tier | RAM | vCPU | SSD | Hourly | Monthly | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | 1 GB | 1 | 20 GB | $0.0042 | $3.00 | Container Apps only |
| Tier 2 | 2 GB | 1 | 30 GB | $0.0083 | $6.00 | Container + VPS |
| Tier 3 | 2 GB | 2 | 40 GB | $0.0125 | $9.00 | Container + VPS |
| Tier 4 | 4 GB | 2 | 40 GB | $0.0167 | $12.00 | Container + VPS |
| Tier 5 | 8 GB | 4 | 80 GB | $0.0333 | $24.00 | Container + VPS |
| Tier 6 | 16 GB | 8 | 160 GB | $0.0667 | $48.00 | Container + VPS |
| Tier 7 | 32 GB | 16 | 320 GB | $0.1333 | $96.00 | Container + VPS |
The $3/month tier (1 GB RAM) is only available for Container Apps. VPS instances start at $6/month (2 GB RAM). All tiers include Intel vCPU, NVMe SSD, SSL certificates, and unmetered 1 Gbps connections.
Additional Costs
Some add-ons are billed on top of the tier:
- Extra SSD (Container Apps): $0.10 per GB per month, added on the Scale Server page
- Snapshots (VPS Apps): $0.10 per GB per month of snapshot storage
- Outbound data transfer (both kinds): free up to a monthly allowance per tier, from 1 TB for Tier 1 up to 10 TB for Tier 7, then $0.10 per GB. Traffic between the parts of one project is not counted, and data transfer in is free
Hardware Specifications
All tiers run on:
- Intel vCPU processors
- NVMe SSD storage
- 1 Gbps network connectivity
Networking
Container Apps
- Apps on the same server share its address, with traffic routing handled by the platform
- Automatic SSL certificates
- Custom domains via CNAME records (subdomains) or ALIAS/ANAME records (apex domains)
- Apps are reached through their HTTPS address
VPS Apps
- Dedicated IPv4 address per instance (included at no extra charge)
- Root access inside the server: you configure its ports, firewall, and network settings yourself
- SSL: a VPS App is a plain server, so HTTPS on its default domain is whatever you (or the AI agent) install
- Custom domains via CNAME records
- Browser-based console access from the dashboard
Storage
- Your data: pausing an app keeps its data; deleting a project or a server removes it
- NVMe SSD storage on every tier
- VPS snapshots: Point-in-time ZFS snapshots for VPS instances, restorable from the dashboard
RepoCloud does not provide automated backups for Container Apps. Use your application’s built-in backup features (e.g., exporting data, database dumps) to protect your data.
Limitations
Container Apps
- No SSH or terminal access
- No dedicated IPv4 address
- No server-level customization (only environment variables and Docker image configuration)
- Cannot install additional system packages
VPS Apps
- No autoscaling (fixed tiers only — resize manually from the manage page)
- A resize to a tier with a smaller disk is not possible; Tier 3 and Tier 4 have the same 40 GB disk
- You are responsible for OS-level security (updates, firewall, SSH hardening)
