Chitchatter

Chitchatter is a browser-based chat room for text, voice, video, screen sharing, and file transfers that exists only while its members are connected and keeps no record of what was said. Every visit starts with a random room name generated on your device, a UUID or a readable passphrase, and you invite people with the link or a QR code. Public rooms admit anyone with the link; private rooms also require a matching password. Messages support Markdown, multiline text, and code blocks, and clicking a name opens a direct conversation. Newcomers to public rooms receive the earlier conversation from peers already there, and typing indicators show who is writing. Start an audio or video call, share your screen to walk a relative through a settings problem, or hand over a file of any size, encrypted before it leaves your browser. Public-key checks verify each peer automatically, with a green lock marking everyone who passes and an icon showing whether the link is direct or relayed. Embed a room in any web page with an iframe or a web component that takes a room name, user name, and color mode. Light and dark themes are built in, and notifications and sounds announce new messages while you work in another tab. Close the tab and the transcript disappears. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. GPL-2.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • Chat without accounts or logs
  • Nobody signs up, and Chitchatter collects no analytics, tracking, or telemetry. Messages live only in browser memory and are cleared the moment you leave a room, never stored on disk.
  • Verify who you are talking to
  • Peers exchange public keys and Chitchatter checks them automatically, marking each verified person with a green lock. Private rooms add a shared password, so only people who know it can join.
  • Help someone remotely from one link
  • Start a video call, share a screen to troubleshoot a device, or send a file of any size straight from the room, with no separate tools to install.
  • Run your own private instance
  • Fork the project, build it, and serve it from your own domain. You choose the pairing and relay servers peers use, and you decide when updates ship.

Features

  • Public and private rooms
  • Rooms are named by a UUID or readable passphrase generated on your device; private rooms need a shared password, and a link or QR code invites guests.
  • Markdown messaging with code blocks
  • Compose multiline messages with Markdown rendering through react-markdown, including code blocks, typing indicators, conversation backfilling for newcomers, and direct messages to any single peer.
  • Audio, video, and screen sharing
  • Place calls with microphone and camera or share a screen over WebRTC connections running directly between browsers, with a TURN relay as fallback when a direct path is blocked.
  • Encrypted unlimited file transfers
  • Files of any size are encrypted before sending and decrypted by the receiver, using the secure-file-transfer library, with StreamSaver.js handling large downloads.
  • Embeddable chat widget
  • Add a room to any website with an iframe, or use the SDK's chat-room web component with attributes for room, user name, color mode, and message sounds.
  • Static build for self-hosting
  • Build with npm and Vite, then serve the dist folder from any static host over HTTPS; src/config sets pairing and relay servers, and an optional API supplies TURN credentials.
