Backspace
Discord, except the server in the sidebar is a server you actually own. Backspace gives a community its spaces, categorized text channels, group direct messages, and friend lists, then adds calling that treats quality as a setting rather than a subscription tier. Share a screen at up to 4K and 120 frames per second, choose the codec and bitrate yourself, give every participant and every stream its own volume slider from silent to double, and watch a live inspector report each connection's ping, jitter, and packet loss while noise suppression keeps the mechanical keyboard out of the call. Servers stop being islands, too: peer your instance with a friend's and friendships, direct messages, calls, and presence cross between them while each owner keeps their own rules, bans, and audit trail. Find people across the federation, decorate a profile, set a custom status, and search old messages by sender, date, or attachment. Admins shape it all from one panel, from registration gates and storage down to a per-resolution bitrate matrix for streams. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. AGPL-3.0 licensed.
Benefits
- Your Community, Your Hardware
- Spaces, channels, messages, and media live on a server you operate, so the community survives regardless of any platform's pricing changes, policy shifts, or shutdown announcements.
- Call Quality You Control
- Screen sharing reaches 4K at 120 frames per second with your choice of codec and bitrate, per-person volume sliders, noise suppression, and a live connection inspector.
- Servers That Talk to Each Other
- Federation peers independent instances for cross-server friends, direct messages, calls, and presence, each community keeping its own ownership, rules, and moderation.
- Moderation With a Paper Trail
- Bans carry reasons and moderator attribution, voice restrictions persist, join requests need approval, and the admin panel governs registration, storage, and streaming limits.
Features
- Spaces and Channels
- Communities organize into spaces with channel categories, role permissions with per-channel overrides, invite codes, public discovery, and request-to-join gating.
- Voice, Video, Screen Share
- Calls support 4K 120fps sharing, VP9 and H.264 codecs, independent volume per participant and stream, push-to-talk, and picture-in-picture.
- Server Federation
- Instances peer with signed server-to-server requests so friends, group messages, calls, presence, and files cross between independently owned servers.
- Messages and Search
- Markdown messages with replies, reactions, rich embeds, and typing indicators stay searchable by sender, content type, and date, with jump-to-message.
- Friends and Profiles
- Friend requests, mutual friends and spaces, cross-instance people search, banners, bios, accent colors, rich activity presence, and custom statuses.
- Admin and Backups
- One panel manages users, registration, storage, and federation peers, streaming gets a granular bitrate matrix, and automatic SQLite backups cover upgrades.
