Velociraptor

Hunting for a suspicious file, process, or registry key across every endpoint becomes a single hunt in Velociraptor, an endpoint visibility and digital forensics platform. A web console sends tasks to clients on Windows, Linux, and macOS machines, which hold a persistent connection and run each task as soon as it is issued. A hunt runs a VQL artifact, one of more than 400 built in, across selected endpoints, picks up machines that reconnect later, and tracks which hosts have answered. Each hunt and collection opens into a notebook where markdown and live VQL cells group, filter, and timeline the results. A virtual file system browses a client's directories and fetches files through file, NTFS, and registry accessors, with hex and text viewers. Offline collectors bundle chosen artifacts into one binary that writes an optionally encrypted container for later import, suiting machines that never reach the server. Client event queries stream telemetry such as DNS lookups to the server, and server event queries can alert Slack, email, Elastic, or Splunk. Quarantine confines a host's network traffic to the Velociraptor server, and the Shell page runs commands on it. Sign-in works through Google, Azure, GitHub, OIDC, or SAML, with reader, analyst, investigator, and administrator roles. Responders reach for it during threat hunts, compromised host triage with KapeFiles targets, and dead disk image analysis. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. AGPL-3.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • Query Every Endpoint At Once
  • A hunt sends one artifact to selected clients, collects from machines that reconnect later, and records which hosts have answered, so fleet-wide questions get a single tracked result.
  • Analyze Results In Shared Notebooks
  • Notebooks pair markdown with live VQL cells over hunt and collection results, so analysts filter, group, and timeline findings together, with their notes beside the data.
  • Collect Evidence From Disconnected Machines
  • Offline collectors run chosen artifacts without a connection to the server and write a container that can be encrypted or password-protected, which the server imports later for analysis.
  • Run Without An External Database
  • Velociraptor stores everything in regular files and directories on the server, so no external database is needed, and the layout works with Amazon EFS, Google Filestore, or NFS.

Features

  • Hunts And Collections
  • Launch a collection on one client or a hunt across many, targeting by label or OS, with expiry and a Hunt Manager that tracks scheduled and finished clients.
  • VQL Notebooks
  • Markdown and VQL cells with context-sensitive suggestions; hunt, collection, and event notebooks are created automatically, and global notebooks can be shared with other users.
  • Virtual File System
  • Browse a client's file system through file, NTFS, and registry accessors, recursively sync directories, fetch files to the server, and inspect them in hex and text viewers.
  • Offline Collector Builder
  • A guided dialog selects artifacts, target operating system, encryption scheme, and collection type, then produces a preconfigured binary that collects without a server connection.
  • Event Monitoring
  • Client event artifacts such as Windows.ETW.DNS stream rows to a timeline view, and server event artifacts escalate to Slack, email, Elastic, or Splunk.
  • Official Docker Container
  • Since version 0.77, the ghcr.io/velocidex/velociraptor-server image runs through Docker Compose, serves GUI port 8889 and frontend port 8000, and builds MSI, DEB, and RPM client installers.
