Nowen Video
Nowen Video turns the hard drive of films and series sitting on your NAS into a streaming service your family actually wants to open, posters, seasons, and all. Point it at your media folders and it scans the usual formats, reads streams with FFprobe, and scrapes rich metadata from TMDb, Douban, TheTVDB, Bangumi, and Fanart.tv, recognizing movie, season, and episode naming as it goes. NFO files and external subtitles are honored, filesystem watching keeps the library current, and collections plus episode navigation make a big archive feel curated rather than dumped. Pressing play is where the engineering shows: a server-side planner decides per client whether to direct play, remux, or transcode to HLS on demand, with automatic fallback when the first choice fails. Hardware acceleration through the GPU keeps transcoding cheap, subtitle and speed controls ride along in the player, and a local analysis pass can surface highlight clips from your own footage. Every family member gets favorites, watch history, and continue-watching progress under their own account, while library permissions decide who sees what. An Emby-compatible API even lets clients like Infuse connect as if it were an Emby server. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. GPL-3.0 licensed.
Benefits
- Folders become a library
- Automatic scanning of MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV, WebM, TS, and RMVB files with FFprobe stream inspection, NFO support, and filesystem watching, so new downloads appear organized without manual importing.
- Metadata from five sources
- A provider chain scrapes TMDb, Douban, TheTVDB, Bangumi, and Fanart.tv for posters, descriptions, and episode data, recognizing common movie, season, and episode naming patterns automatically.
- Playback that just works
- A server-side planner picks direct play, remux, or on-demand HLS transcoding per client and falls back automatically on failure, with Intel and AMD hardware acceleration and software transcoding behind it.
- Everyone gets their space
- Per-user favorites, watch history, continue watching, and playback progress under JWT accounts, with media library permissions and content controls, and the first registered user becoming administrator.
Features
- Scanning and scraping pipeline
- FFprobe stream analysis, external subtitle scanning, NFO compatibility, and fsnotify filesystem watching feed a five-provider metadata chain covering films, series, seasons, episodes, and collections.
- Adaptive HLS transcoding
- Bundled FFmpeg powers direct play, remux, and on-demand HLS transcoding with persistent job state, cached artifacts, recovery, and cleanup, accelerated on Intel and AMD GPUs via /dev/dri.
- Highlights from your footage
- Optional local media analysis runs sparse two-stage highlight detection with live progress events, generating on-demand previews and a dedicated highlights tab without pre-processing the whole library.
- Emby API compatibility
- An Emby-compatible API surface lets Infuse, Kodi, and Emby-style clients connect natively, while the web player adds subtitle selection, playback speed, and episode switching controls.
