Lunarr

Lunarr turns the movie and TV folders you already store into a private streaming service with posters, progress tracking, and play-anywhere convenience. Point it at local disks or at libraries living on SFTP and WebDAV servers, and it scans, identifies, and decorates everything with TMDb artwork, cast pages, similar titles, and because-you-watched recommendations. Press play and the file either streams directly or is transcoded on the fly into seekable HLS, generating only the segments around the moment you are watching instead of converting whole films up front. Continue watching follows you between sessions, sidecar subtitles are picked up automatically, and known intros and credits can be skipped. Send the picture to the big screen with Chromecast or AirPlay, pair new devices without typing passwords, and hand a guest a share link instead of your account. Underneath, an admin console manages users, roles, and which libraries each person may see, watches background jobs, and holds API keys and registration settings. Rescans run on schedules you set from minutes to a month, local folders can be watched live for new arrivals, and metadata refreshes itself on a timer. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. Apache-2.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • Media stays where it lives
  • Libraries can sit on local disks or on remote SFTP and WebDAV servers, so the media server does not demand that terabytes move before anyone can press play.
  • Transcoding only where you watch
  • On-the-fly HLS generates segments around your current position with a small lookahead, so jumping from minute five to minute eighty never transcodes the hour in between.
  • Household accounts, sensibly shared
  • Admins share each library with everyone or only selected users, guests receive share links instead of passwords, and new devices pair without typing credentials on a TV.
  • A library that maintains itself
  • Local folders are watched for new files, remote libraries rescan on schedules from five minutes to thirty days, and TMDb metadata refreshes itself in the background.

Features

  • Local and remote libraries
  • Local paths, SFTP roots, and WebDAV endpoints become movie and TV libraries, with concurrent remote scans and per-operation timeouts that keep unresponsive servers from stalling jobs.
  • Direct play and HLS
  • Browsers get direct streaming when they can handle the file and seekable FFmpeg HLS transcoding when they cannot, with optional VAAPI hardware acceleration.
  • Subtitles and skip markers
  • Sidecar .vtt and .srt subtitles are detected during scans and normalized to WebVTT, while TheIntroDB markers enable intro, recap, and credits skipping.
  • Discovery and person pages
  • Continue watching, similar titles, because-you-watched rows, and a per-user watchlist fill the home hubs, and person pages assemble a filmography across your libraries.
  • Admin console and API
  • Manage users, roles, library sharing, jobs, and transcoding settings from the admin console, and automate the rest with API keys and OpenAPI documentation.
