Hister

Hister is a private search engine for everything you have read or saved, indexing the full text of visited pages, local files, and imported browser history so one query finds the page you only half remember. Firefox and Chrome extensions capture each page as you browse, while a crawler and importers for browser history and bookmarks backfill earlier reading. Watched directories add local files to the same collection. Queries accept field filters, quoted phrases, wildcards, negation, date ranges, and aliases, with a readable stored preview beside each result. Opt-in semantic search matches documents by meaning through an Ollama, llama.cpp, or OpenAI-compatible embeddings endpoint. The same index answers in the browser, a terminal interface, the command line, an HTTP API, and an MCP server for AI assistants. Multi-user mode gives each person separate documents, rules, and access tokens, with password or OAuth sign-in, and public mode lets anonymous visitors search a curated index. Rebuild a research trail, recover a half-remembered article, or share one searchable knowledge base, with no telemetry. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. AGPL-3.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • Find pages by what they say
  • Full-text indexing stores the actual contents of visited pages and files, so you can search for a phrase you remember instead of guessing at titles, URLs, or bookmark folders.
  • Browsing history stays on your server
  • The server has no telemetry and needs no cloud service; the extension sends page content only to the Hister address you configure, and the index lives in your own data volume.
  • Search from browser, terminal, or AI
  • One index answers through the web interface, a terminal client, the CLI, an HTTP API, and an MCP endpoint, so AI assistants can search and preview your saved pages directly.
  • One server shared by many users
  • Enable user handling and each person gets separate credentials, documents, search results, rules, and a personal access token, backed by SQLite or PostgreSQL on a single instance.

Features

  • Browser extension capture
  • Firefox and Chrome extensions send each rendered page you visit to your configured Hister server, while history and bookmark importers backfill what you read earlier.
  • Crawler and file watching
  • Crawler backends drive Firefox over BiDi or Chromium through chromedp to fetch rendered sites, and watched directories index local files into the same collection.
  • Rich query language
  • Field filters, quoted phrases, wildcards, negation, date ranges, and query aliases narrow results, alongside language-aware indexes and configurable result priorities.
  • Opt-in semantic search
  • Connect an Ollama, llama.cpp, or OpenAI-compatible embeddings endpoint to blend vector matches with keyword results, using sqlite-vec on SQLite or pgvector on PostgreSQL.
  • MCP server and HTTP API
  • An MCP endpoint exposes search, stored previews, and history tools to AI assistants, while personal access tokens authenticate scripts and the hister CLI over the HTTP API.
  • Docker and reverse proxy
  • Official ghcr.io images for AMD64 and ARM64 listen on port 4433 with a persistent volume, and Caddy or Nginx adds HTTPS; a Prometheus metrics endpoint is optional.
