Photofield
Instead of paging through albums, Photofield lays a whole photo library out on one zoomable canvas, where thousands of thumbnails sharpen into full-resolution pictures as you zoom. Collections come straight from directories named in a configuration file. One setting turns every subfolder into its own collection. Pick a layout per collection: album grouped by date, timeline with month markers, wall, map, highlights with dates and place names, or flex. Sort oldest first, newest first, or shuffled hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly. Tiles load progressively, and an info drawer shows the date, file name, and dimensions. A right-click menu opens or copies an image, copies its link, or finds similar images. Originals are never modified, so a read-only mount is safe. Indexing runs at up to 10,000 files per second on a fast SSD with a warm cache. JPEG, PNG, AVIF, HEIC, DNG, GIF, MP4, and MOV files are recognized. Place names resolve from an embedded database, with no external lookups. The optional photofield-ai companion adds search by words like beach sunset or cat eyes, plus a Faces layout of detected faces. Alpha tagging lets you label photos. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. MIT licensed.
Benefits
- See every photo at once
- Wall, timeline, album, and highlights layouts put thousands of photos on screen together, and every view zooms from the overview to full resolution without paging through numbered gallery pages.
- Your originals stay untouched
- Photofield only reads your files and treats the file system as the source of truth, so a read-only mount protects an irreplaceable archive while thumbnails and settings live in a separate data folder.
- Find photos by describing them
- With the optional photofield-ai service, queries such as beach sunset or cat eyes return matching pictures ranked by similarity, and Date, After, and Before filters narrow results to a period.
- Indexes at file system speed
- Files are indexed at up to 10,000 per second on a fast SSD, then metadata and dominant colors are extracted afterward, so even very large libraries become browsable quickly.
Features
- Multiple photo layouts
- Album, timeline, wall, map, highlights, and flex layouts can be set per collection or switched in the interface, with sorting by date or hourly to monthly shuffles.
- Progressive zoomable viewer
- Click any photo to zoom in, use Ctrl or Cmd with the wheel or pinch on touch screens, and watch tiles sharpen from a low-resolution preview to full quality.
- Semantic search and faces
- The optional photofield-ai server enables text search by photo content, face detection with a Faces layout, and deduplication, while alpha tagging stores labels in the cache database.
- Local reverse geolocation
- Place names for about 50,000 regions are resolved from an embedded geoBoundaries database, so location labels appear without any external API calls or network lookups.
- Flexible thumbnail pipeline
- Reuses embedded JPEG thumbnails and Synology Moments or Photo Station thumbnails, falls back to FFmpeg and libjpeg-turbo decoding, and keeps generated thumbnails in a SQLite cache database.
- Binary or Docker deployment
- Ships as a static executable for Windows, Linux, and macOS or as the ghcr.io/smilyorg/photofield image, configured through configuration.yaml and the PHOTOFIELD_ADDRESS variable.
