Omnivore

Self-hosted and built around long reading, Omnivore saves articles, newsletters, and PDFs, renders web pages as clean text, remembers your place, and keeps every highlight searchable. Pages arrive from the web app's Add button or from Chrome and Firefox extensions that authenticate with an API key. Newsletters arrive through generated email addresses once an IMAP watcher or another mail bridge is set up. PDFs open in the same reader and accept highlights and notes just like articles. Labels, saved searches, and filters such as subscription:"Name" make a big library easy to slice. The RSS section follows your feeds, lets you add a story to the library or hide it, and can sort stories into topics when an OpenAI key is configured. Custom extractors scroll lazy-loaded pages, follow paginated articles, and strip pop-ups before saving. Rules trigger webhooks when pages are created or updated, which suits automatic labelling and other custom workflows. E-ink reading settings add double-tap page turns and volume-button scrolling, and Android and iOS apps sync the same library. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. AGPL-3.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • Your reading library stays yours
  • Saved articles, highlights, notes, and feed subscriptions live in a PostgreSQL database on your own server, so no hosted reading service can shut down, reprice, or read them.
  • Resume long reads on any device
  • Each web page is reduced to distraction-free text and your reading position is saved automatically, so a long article picks up exactly where you stopped on another device.
  • Highlights and notes in one place
  • Highlight passages in articles and PDFs, attach notes, and browse every highlight from one Highlights page, while label and keyword search helps you find the source articles again.
  • Automate intake and organization
  • Webhook rules fire when pages are created or updated, newsletters and RSS feeds arrive without manual saving, and an optional OpenAI key sorts feed stories into topics.

Features

  • Clean reader view
  • Mozilla's Readability library turns saved web pages into distraction-free text, and the position within each article is stored so reading resumes where it stopped.
  • Highlights and notes
  • Select text in articles or PDFs to highlight it and attach notes; PDF.js renders documents in the browser and a Highlights page lists every passage.
  • Labels and saved searches
  • Colored labels, a keyword and label search bar, saved-search shortcuts in the sidebar, and filters such as subscription: narrow a large library quickly.
  • RSS and newsletters
  • Subscribe to RSS feeds, add stories to the library or hide them, and receive newsletters through generated email addresses bridged by an IMAP watcher or webhook.
  • Custom content extractors
  • Puppeteer-driven content fetching with Chromium scrolls lazy-loaded pages, follows paginated articles, and strips pop-ups and mid-roll ads before a page is saved.
  • Webhooks and API keys
  • Rules call webhooks on events such as PAGE_CREATED and PAGE_UPDATED, and API keys generated in Omnivore settings authenticate the browser extensions.
