Gerrit Code Review

Unlike pull-request forges, Gerrit reviews every Git change as a series of patchsets, and nothing merges until the required approvals are in. Developers upload with a plain git push to a refs/for ref, adding push options for topics, hashtags, work-in-progress, or private changes. Each change gets a page listing reviewers, CCs, an attention set that flags who must act next, and submit requirements driven by labels such as Code-Review and Verified, with a quick approve button for the last missing vote. Side-by-side diffs with syntax highlighting take inline comments written in Markdown, saved as drafts and published together. A Checks tab shows CI runs reported by plugins, and integrations reach Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Zuul, and webhooks. Access rights attach to groups and branch patterns, including regular expressions, and inherit from parent projects and All-Projects. Sign-in works with LDAP, OAuth, OpenID, or HTTP single sign-on, and SAML through a plugin. A query language filters changes by status, owner, reviewer, label, file path, and reviewer count. Projects pick a submit strategy: merge if necessary, fast forward only, rebase if necessary, rebase always, merge always, or cherry pick. A REST API, SSH commands, and a plugin system extend the server, and an optional Review Agent chat panel can summarize a change once an AI provider plugin is installed. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. Apache-2.0 licensed.

Benefits

  • Review Every Patchset Before Merging
  • Each uploaded commit becomes a numbered change with patchsets, so reviewers compare revisions in side-by-side diffs with inline comments, and only approved work reaches the target branch.
  • Control Access Down To Branches
  • Group-based permissions apply to individual refs and regex branch patterns, inherit from All-Projects, and can be made exclusive, so administrators restrict who may read, push, vote, or submit.
  • Plug Into Your CI Pipeline
  • Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Zuul, and webhooks connect build results to each change, while the Checks tab and labels such as Verified show whether a patchset is safe to submit.
  • Keep Review History With Your Code
  • NoteDb stores votes, comments, and change metadata as Git commits beside the code, so a mirror clone carries the full review history and replication or backups cover both together.

Features

  • Side-By-Side Diff Viewer
  • Syntax-highlighted diffs compare any two patchsets or a base, with outline, blame, and full-file views, plus Markdown inline comments saved as drafts until published.
  • Fine-Grained Access Control
  • Permissions bind to groups and ref patterns, including regular expressions, inherit from parent projects and All-Projects, and can be exclusive for locked-down release branches.
  • Flexible Sign-In Options
  • Authenticate through LDAP, LDAP bind, OAuth provider plugins, OpenID, client SSL certificates, or HTTP single sign-on, and add SAML with a plugin.
  • Change Search Language
  • Operators such as status, owner, reviewer, label, file path regex, is:attention, and reviewercount filter changes, with default views for open, merged, watched, and starred changes.
  • REST API And SSH Commands
  • A JSON REST API and an SSH daemon on port 29418 let scripts query changes, post reviews, stream events, and manage projects, groups, and plugins.
  • Extensible Plugin System
  • Backend Java plugins and frontend plugins add CI integrations, UI extensions, and services; core plugins include replication, webhooks, delete-project, and Gitiles repository browsing.
