Freedit
One binary, no JavaScript required, no database server to babysit: Freedit is a complete forum that starts in seconds and stays out of your way. Communities organize into Inns, group spaces in the style of subreddits, where members post links and discussions under topics you define. A Solo feed adds personal microblogging for short posts that sit beside the forum instead of competing with it. The built-in RSS reader follows your favorite sites and brings new articles into the same place you discuss them, and podcast subscriptions play episodes in the browser with subtitles that scroll in sync with the audio. Private messages are encrypted end to end, so only the sender and recipient can read them. Posts support Markdown, mathematics, and syntax-highlighted code, rendered on the server so every page works even with JavaScript disabled in the browser. Because there is exactly one file to deploy and the database lives inside it, backups are a copy and upgrades are a swap. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. MIT licensed.
Benefits
- Deploy One File, Run Everything
- A single binary with an embedded database serves the whole forum on port 3001, so installation is a download and a launch, and backups are copying one working directory.
- Works With JavaScript Disabled
- Pages are rendered on the server and remain fully functional without JavaScript, which keeps the forum usable on locked-down browsers, old hardware, and privacy-focused setups.
- Private Messages Stay Private
- Direct messages are encrypted end to end between sender and recipient, so even the person running the server cannot read what members say to each other in private.
- Reading And Listening Built In
- An online RSS reader and podcast player with synchronized scrolling subtitles live inside the forum, so members follow articles and episodes where the discussion already happens.
Features
- Inns Group Spaces
- Communities split into Inns, topic spaces in the style of subreddits, each gathering its own posts, members, and discussions under a shared theme.
- Solo Microblogging Feed
- A personal short-post feed runs beside the forum topics, giving members a place for quick updates that do not need a full discussion thread.
- Online RSS Reader
- Subscribe to external feeds and read new articles inside Freedit, then discuss them in the Inns without juggling a separate reader application.
- Podcast Playback With Subtitles
- Podcast subscriptions play in the browser while generated subtitle files scroll in sync with the audio, making episodes searchable and accessible.
- Markdown, Math, And Code
- Posts render Markdown with mathematical notation and syntax-highlighted code blocks on the server, so technical discussions read well on any client.
- Embedded Database, Single Binary
- The fjall embedded database lives inside the one deployed binary, removing the separate database server, its credentials, and its maintenance from your stack.
