Campfire Rust
Your team chat can be one executable on your own server: Campfire Rust runs rooms, direct messages, attachments, and search as a single binary that replaces the whole Ruby, Puma, Redis, Resque, and Thruster stack. Create rooms with access controls for projects, departments, or a private board discussion, and keep direct messages beside them for quick questions. File attachments arrive with previews, mentions pull the right person into a thread, and search finds the decision someone made months ago. Web Push notifications reach browsers and phones, so a quiet room still finds its people when it matters. Chatbots connect through a simple HTTP API for sending and receiving messages and attachments, which makes Campfire a home for build alerts, deploy notices, and support pings. Existing Campfire installs upgrade in place because the Rust binary reads the same SQLite database, storage layout, and signed cookies, with no data migration and no mass sign-out. Automatic TLS with Let's Encrypt certificates, HTTP/2, and Action Cable-compatible WebSockets are built in, and the whole system works on air-gapped networks that never touch the internet. Run it as your primary chat, as a backup for the day a hosted service goes down, or as a walled garden for executives and events. Running on a dedicated VPS on RepoCloud with guaranteed CPU, RAM, and SSD, full root SSH access, and a browser serial console. MIT licensed.
Benefits
- One binary replaces stack
- A single campfire executable replaces Ruby, Puma, Redis, Resque, and Thruster, with TLS, HTTP/2, Web Push, search, and WebSockets built in, so there is far less to patch and monitor.
- Drop-in upgrade path
- The Rust binary reuses the existing SQLite database, storage layout, and signed and encrypted cookies, so current Campfire installs upgrade without migrating data or signing every user out.
- Chat without a subscription
- Rooms with access controls, direct messages, attachments with previews, mentions, and search cover everyday team communication without per-seat pricing, message history limits, or a vendor holding your archive.
- Works fully air-gapped
- Campfire never pings a remote service, so it runs on isolated networks in research facilities, board environments, and secure sites where hosted chat products cannot be used at all.
Features
- Rooms and direct messages
- Multiple rooms with access controls sit beside direct messages, @mentions, file attachments with previews, and full search, covering the daily communication patterns teams expect from group chat.
- Web Push notifications
- Web Push with VAPID keys notifies browsers and mobile devices when mentions and messages arrive, while Action Cable-compatible WebSockets keep every open client updated in real time.
- Bot HTTP API
- Chatbots send and receive messages and attachments through a simple HTTP API, so CI systems, monitoring tools, and internal scripts can post into rooms your team already reads.
- Built-in TLS serving
- Automatic Let's Encrypt certificates via TLS_DOMAIN, HTTP/2, and media handling with libvips and ffmpeg are built into the image for amd64 and arm64 servers.
- Same data as Rails
- The SQLite database, /rails/storage layout, backups, and signed cookies match the Rails implementation, making the Rust binary a drop-in replacement rather than a migration project.
