# Managing Container Apps

> Environment variables, Docker image versions, logs, rebuilds, scaling, renaming, custom domains, and lifecycle controls for container-based deployments

## Container App Management

A project's manage page controls the project: its size, variables, image tag, custom domain, pause, rebuild, logs, deletion, and name. The app's own settings stay inside the app, and the Instructions card on the manage page points to the maintainers' setup steps.

Click **Manage** on a project in your Projects tab to open its page. Manage is a button on an Online or Paused project and a quieter link on a project in Error; a project that is still deploying or updating has none.

## Management Features

> **Status & Usage**
>
> The status is the badge beside the project name, with a progress bar while the project is deploying or updating; the badge reads Maintenance when the app's host does not answer. On an autoscaling app that is Online, click **View Usage Chart** to see the tier your app used in each of the last 12 hours

> **Environment Variables**
>
> App settings like passwords and API keys. Click **Edit Env Vars** (available while the app is Online) to add, edit, or remove variables. Changing them restarts the app; the page states 3–7 minutes.

> **Rebuild / Update**
>
> Reinstalls the app with the latest version. Your data is kept. Offered while the project is Deploying or Online, and not for a multi-container (Docker Compose) app.

> **Edit Docker Image**
>
> Pin or change the app version (advanced). Available while the app is Online, and not for a multi-container (Docker Compose) app. Use it to go back to an earlier version.

> **View Logs**
>
> The most recent output from each service, for debugging. Available while the app is Online; click **Refresh logs** to load the latest.

> **Custom Domain**
>
> Add your own domain with two CNAME records (the domain itself and `_acme-challenge` for the certificate); the page reports when the certificate is being issued. Enabled only while the app is Online; the container app OpenClaw has none. See [Custom Domains](https://repocloud.io/docs/manage/custom-domains.md).

## Environment Variables

Environment variables let you configure your application without modifying code:

**1. Open Edit Env Vars**

Click **Edit Env Vars** on the manage page (the button appears while the app is Online). The page lists the variables of your app under `Service: <name>` for each service; the platform-managed variables are left out of the list and are kept when you save. Values are hidden: hold the pointer over one to reveal it.

**2. Make Changes**

- **Add**: click **Add variable** under the list of a service and enter a key and value (the value box hides what you type)
- **Edit**: change the key or value directly in any row
- **Delete**: click the trash icon next to the variable ("Remove this variable"); the row disappears at once, and the variable is removed only when you save

**3. Save**

Click **Save changes**, then **Save and restart** in the dialog "Save environment variables?" (**Cancel** leaves everything as it was). Your application restarts with the new configuration: the page states 3 to 7 minutes, and the dashboard shows the project as Updating, which it describes as usually about 4 minutes. The browser returns to the dashboard with "Environment variables updated successfully!" and an email `ENV Update Request for <app> Submitted!` arrives.

## Rebuilding and Updating

The **Rebuild / Update** button reinstalls your application with the latest version. Confirm it with **Yes, rebuild** in the dialog:

1. Pulls the latest app version
2. Keeps your app's own data
3. Restarts the application: the dashboard shows the project as Updating, usually about 4 minutes, and an email `Rebuild Instance Request for <app> Submitted!` arrives

To pin a specific version instead of using the latest, click **Edit Docker Image** and enter the version tag. The page edits the tag of each service that runs from an image; a service built another way, or one that uses a fixed image the page leaves out, is not listed, and an empty box sends the repository with no tag. The page warns: "Changing the image tag upgrades or downgrades your app. An invalid tag can stop it from starting - check the app's release notes first."

> [!TIP]
>
> Use **Edit Docker Image** to roll back if a new release causes problems: enter the previous version's tag and save. Database schema migrations applied by the newer version are not automatically reversed. An invalid tag can stop the app from starting, so check the app's release notes first.

## Scaling

- **Autoscaling apps**: An autoscaling app is created with ceilings of 16,000 MB of memory and 4 CPU cores. Each hourly billing run reads the app's memory and processor once and bills the larger of the tier its memory needs and the tier its processor needs, up to Tier 6 (see [Autoscaling](https://repocloud.io/docs/pricing/autoscaling.md)). Click **View Usage Chart** to see the tier of each of the last 12 hours. An hour that has not been billed yet shows as an empty bar, and a project with no billed hour yet is sent away with "No instance costs found for the given instance." The manage page of an autoscaling app has **View Usage Chart** and no **Scale Server** button.
- **Fixed-size apps**: **Scale Server** opens the Scale Server page. The button is active only while the app is Online (otherwise it is disabled with "Available when the app is online") and is not offered for a Docker Compose app. The page has the tier list, the extra SSD, and the switch "Autoscale compute and storage resources". A change takes effect in a few minutes and the project shows Updating; a larger size can be refused with "Increasing instance size is not possible." Turning autoscaling on sets Tier 1 and drops the extra SSD.

## Pausing and Deleting

- **Pause Server**: temporarily halts the application. It is offered only while the app is Online and asks "Yes, pause it". A paused Container App is billed 25% of its tier price and the full price of its extra SSD. **Unpause Server** ("Restarts the app and returns to standard pricing. Takes a few minutes.") needs a positive balance (otherwise it opens Billing), restarts the app, and rebuilds it, so the project shows Updating. An app paused because the balance reached zero has no Unpause button.
- **Delete Server**: permanently removes the app and all of its data. This cannot be undone, and no further hourly charges follow. The Delete Server dialog also has a box "I encountered an error with this application" that adds an "Error details" field.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Deleting an instance is permanent. Back up any important data through your application's built-in export features before deleting.

## Rename Project

Click **Rename** at the top of the manage page to change your project's display name (6 to 128 characters). This updates the name shown in the dashboard but does not affect your application's URL or configuration: "Only the display name changes - URLs, data and billing stay the same".
